History :

The Paul Bari Durga Puja is more than a festival – it is the living story of faith, transformation, and the boundless grace of Maa Durga. Its beginning lies in the life of Sri Sukhmoy Paul, a Bhramabadi Yogi who, until that time, was a non-believer in murti puja (idol worship).

A Prayer in Times of Distress

Sri Sukhmoy Paul was once engulfed in unbearable hardship. A sudden crisis left him burdened with crushing debts and severe distress. With no other way left, he turned to the Divine. On the sacred day of Ashtami Puja, at the noon time, he went to the historic Devi Bari Temple of Cooch Behar – one of the most revered shrines dedicated to Maa Durga, with a glorious legacy dating back to the royal days of the Cooch Behar Kings.

At that very hour, Devi Bari was overflowing with devotees. People prayed with deep faith, making offerings and sacrifices – even pigeons – to please the Goddess. Observing this, Sukhmoy Paul, though a skeptic, was struck by a thought: “Surely there must be some power here. Otherwise, why would so many people sacrifice with such devotion?”

The Conditional Prayer

In that moment of reflection and desperation, Sukhmoy Paul prayed to Maa Durga with folded hands and a trembling heart. He said: “O Mother, if there is truly divine power in You, then within one year free me completely from this unbearable distress and release me from the chains of my debt. If You do so, I will devote my entire life to Your worship and celebrate Durga Puja every year at my home until the end of my days. But if no relief comes, then I will take it as truth that there is no soul, no power in idols, and that all of this is false.”

The Divine Blessing

What followed was nothing less than a miracle. Within that year, by Maa Durga’s boundless grace, Sri Sukhmoy Paul was freed from the burden of debt and all his difficulties were resolved. The darkness of despair lifted, and life regained peace and stability. The Divine Mother had answered his prayer.

True to his vow, Sri Sukhmoy Paul began the annual worship of Shree Shree Durga at Paul Bari, offering his devotion with deep gratitude. What began as the personal vow of a distressed devotee has now become a tradition cherished and celebrated by his descendants, neighbors, and well-wishers alike.

The Legacy Lives On

This year marks the 20th year of Paul Bari Durga Puja. From its humble and miraculous origin, the puja has grown into a festival of faith, unity, and cultural heritage. Every year, the house resonates with the rhythm of dhak, the fragrance of incense, the sacred chants, and the joyous gathering of people who come together to honor Maa Durga.

The story of its beginning continues to inspire all – a reminder that the Divine Mother’s power is real, eternal, and compassionate, and that sincere faith can transform even the darkest despair into radiant hope.

অষ্টমীর প্রার্থনায় জন্ম নেয়া প্রতিজ্ঞা আজ ২০ বছরের ঐতিহ্য।  ভক্তি, ঐক্য আর আশার আলোয় মুখরিত পাল বাড়ির দুর্গোৎসব।

 

“অষ্টমীর প্রার্থনা, ভক্তির অঙ্গীকার,

আজও বাজে ঢাক, ছড়িয়ে দেয় সুখ-সঞ্চার।

ঐতিহ্যের শিখা, ভক্তির আলোকরেখা,

পালবাড়ির দুর্গোৎসব আনন্দে বয়ে চলে একা ”

পাল বাড়ির দুর্গাপুজো শুধুমাত্র এক উৎসব নয় – এটি বিশ্বাস, রূপান্তর আর মা দুর্গার অপরিসীম করুণার এক জীবন্ত কাহিনি। এর সূচনা হয়েছিল শ্রী সুখময় পাল–এর জীবনে, যিনি ছিলেন এক ব্রহ্মবাদী যোগী এবং সেই সময় পর্যন্ত মূর্তি পূজা-য় অবিশ্বাসী।

দুঃখ–ক্লেশে এক প্রার্থনা

এক সময় শ্রী সুখময় পাল ভয়ঙ্কর দুঃসময়ের মধ্যে পড়ে গেলেন। হঠাৎ বিপদের কারণে তিনি ভয়াবহ ঋণের বোঝায় জর্জরিত হয়ে পড়লেন এবং গভীর দুশ্চিন্তায় নিমজ্জিত হলেন। কোনো পথ না দেখে তিনি আশ্রয় নিলেন দেবীর। অষ্টমী পুজোর দিনে, দুপুরবেলায় তিনি গেলেন কোচবিহারের ঐতিহাসিক দেবী বাড়ি মন্দিরে – যা মা দুর্গার অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ তীর্থস্থান এবং যার ঐতিহ্য গৌরবময় কোচবিহার রাজবংশের আমল থেকে চলে আসছে। সেই সময় দেবী বাড়ি উপচে পড়ছিল ভক্তদের ভিড়ে। সকলেই গভীর ভক্তিভরে প্রার্থনা ও নৈবেদ্য দিচ্ছিলেন, অনেকে এমনকি কবুতরও বলিদান করছিলেন দেবীকে সন্তুষ্ট করতে। এ দৃশ্য দেখে, মূর্তি পূজায় অবিশ্বাসী সুখময় পাল মনে মনে ভাবলেন – “অবশ্যই এখানে কোনো এক অদৃশ্য শক্তি আছে, তা না হলে এত মানুষ এমন ত্যাগ ও ভক্তি নিয়ে কেন আসবে?”

শর্তসাপেক্ষ প্রার্থনা

সেই মুহূর্তে, ভীষণ দুঃখ ও সংকটের মধ্যে, সুখময় পল কাঁপা কণ্ঠে জোড়হাতে প্রার্থনা করলেন মা দুর্গার কাছে। তিনি বললেন – “হে মা, যদি সত্যিই তোমার মধ্যে ঐশ্বরিক শক্তি থাকে, তবে এক বছরের মধ্যে আমাকে এই অসহনীয় দুঃখ থেকে সম্পূর্ণ মুক্ত করো এবং ঋণের শৃঙ্খল ভেঙে দাও। যদি তা ঘটে, তবে জীবনের অন্তিম দিন পর্যন্ত আমি তোমার পূজায় নিজেকে উৎসর্গ করব এবং প্রতি বছর আমার বাড়িতে দুর্গাপুজো অনুষ্ঠিত করব। কিন্তু যদি কোনো মুক্তি না আসে, তবে আমি ধরে নেব যে কোনো আত্মা নেই, কোনো শক্তি নেই মূর্তিতে, সবই মিথ্যা।”

দেবীর কৃপা

এরপর ঘটল এক অলৌকিক ঘটনা। ঠিক সেই বছরের মধ্যেই মা দুর্গার অসীম কৃপায় শ্রী সুখময় পাল ঋণমুক্ত হলেন, সকল দুঃখ–কষ্ট দূর হল। অন্ধকার দূরে সরে গিয়ে জীবনে আবার শান্তি ও স্থিতি ফিরে এল। দেবী তাঁর প্রার্থনা গ্রহণ করেছিলেন। শপথ অনুযায়ী, শ্রী সুখময় পল শুরু করলেন প্রতি বছর শ্রীশ্রী দুর্গাপুজো পল বাড়িতে, গভীর ভক্তি ও কৃতজ্ঞতায়। যা এক পীড়িত ভক্তের ব্যক্তিগত প্রতিজ্ঞা হিসেবে শুরু হয়েছিল, আজ তা পরিণত হয়েছে এক ঐতিহ্যে – যা তাঁর উত্তরসূরি, প্রতিবেশী ও শুভানুধ্যায়ীরা সমান আনন্দে পালন করেন।

আজকের উত্তরাধিকার

এই বছর পাল বাড়ির দুর্গাপুজোর ২০তম বর্ষ। অলৌকিক সূচনার পর থেকে এই পূজা আজ পরিণত হয়েছে এক মহোৎসবে – যেখানে মিলেছে বিশ্বাস, ঐক্য ও সাংস্কৃতিক ঐতিহ্য। প্রতি বছর পল বাড়ি মুখরিত হয় ঢাকের বাদ্য, ধূপ–ধুনোর গন্ধ, মন্ত্রোচ্চারণ আর অসংখ্য মানুষের মিলনোৎসবে, যারা সবাই মিলে মা দুর্গার আরাধনায় একত্র হন। এর এই আদি কাহিনি আজও সকলকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে – মনে করিয়ে দেয় যে মা দুর্গার শক্তি চিরন্তন, বাস্তব ও সহানুভূতিশীল, আর একান্ত বিশ্বাসই পারে জীবনের অন্ধকারকে রূপান্তর করতে আশার আলোয়।
